General Information:

Delaware Futures is a non-profit organization centrally located in the City of Wilmington in Delaware.  The goal of the Delaware Futures program is very clear: participating students will successfully enroll into a college or university, when they graduate from high school. Since the first graduation year, in 1998, over 84% of Delaware Futures graduates successfully enrolled into college.  Based on U.S. Department of Education statistics, that is over five times the rate of college enrollment for low-income students.

In 1994 the Delaware Futures Program was started for low-income students who had desire and potential but little likelihood to enroll into college. Starting in summer after eighth grade, Delaware Futures helps at-risk, economically disadvantaged urban youth develop the social, academic, and problem-solving skills they need for high education. Students participate in the Delaware Futures Program at no monetary cost to their families during the four years that they were in high school. Students who complete the program can qualify for tuition scholarships at Delaware Futures’ twelve partnering colleges and universities.

Delaware Futures is a year round program, in which a student advisor is assigned to be a class advisor for up to 25 students in each class of freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. During the school year, students participate in scheduled weekly activities that consist of homework nights, group meetings and biweekly one-on-one sessions with their class advisors. On homework nights, tutors are available to assist students in their academics. Group Meetings consist of workshops and learning sessions that address academics, preparation for college and life skills aimed at increasing student success.

During the summers, students participate in trips that include Adventure-Based Learning (Adventure-Based Learning is an outgrowth of experiential education) and Community Service. Additionally, students are provided internship experiences intended to align with student career interests. These programs are designed to help students make responsible choices and develop goals for college and for their future.
